The goal for the next few weeks is very linear, find a way to bring the elements that went well in the shoe and bring them to the parts that I plan on improving. something that I thought went very well was the sewing of the heel. By hand it was made well and seemed very sturdy but the placement and size of it is something that can be improved. how linear the whole shoe is was both a problem for the heel and the toe as well so maybe in order to improve this I want to place my shoe on a board with a clear mid point labeled. In terms of size of the shoe I did two things right and two things wrong, the front and the back anddd the back and the front. individually the front of the shoe is decently nice, always room for improvement, but there isn't too much I would ding myself on since it was the first time, and the back was very good and appeared to fit my foot. The only thing is that the front and the back aren't the same size. I ended up trimming too much from the sides resulting in a shoe that was lopsided where it was not tall enough in the back and too tall in the front so the overall problem that is seen with the shoe so far is adjusting the size and cut of each part of the shoe in order to match them better.

So, all things considered making the first shoe it went well. This model I chose to do all of the sewing by hand in order to get a better feel for everything in terms of making the shoe and everything was going well until the problem of the top of the shoe not fitting the front. While the top was well shaped to my foot ultimately i made the front too narrow for my wide foot and others around the class don't have feet long enough to fit the shoe so the first model of this shoe cannot be used too well
The first day cutting the material went decently well giving all things considered, since the tracing was done with a white crayon in order to get the better outline of the shoe. Something that was a problem was getting even cuts, when making a shoe by drawing finding the right dimensions to fit the foot was the problem so I adjusted by trimming off some of the side hang and creating a better shoe that I can work with.
Today I finally have the chance to work with all of my materials. For the outer parts of my shoe I have a nicer shade hat imitates leader and a rougher outer material that reminds me of a cerapey hopefully I can find a technique that allows for me to successfully make the outer part of my shoe. And secondly the inner parts for both of mine are more similar to carpets because I don't want to use real fur. Coming this far has worked very well and the last part of the shoe, other than sewing, will be the rubber sole I hope to find eventually. Today in class My goal is to work more on the print since the one I made for the first try was too large in certain spots
For today in Genius Hour my goal is to finalize my presentation that I will be giving to the class coming up soon. The key points that I hope to focus on in my presentation is what I have done in order to create a template for my moccasin design, the process of taking apart another and creating the pattern. Followed up by the research of materials that would work the best for a shoe that can go out in the weather and properly function, but lastly an important part of this project is learning about the technology used in order to create the proper shoe without making stitches that are too soft so finding the different types of sewing machines in order to create a strong shoe that people can comfortably wear.
Recently in genius hour the idea of different sizes has come to mind when I was talking with my table mates and what they would want in a shoe. In the clothing industry there are many approaches to how to size the product that is being made. Shoes have a very different style of sizing compared to shirts so in a simpler style of making shoes like myself I pondered whether a system of small medium and large or going the extra mile and making them individuals sizes would benefit me more in the future. This website luckily has a survey feature so down below here I will be posing the question whether it is better for a small company in your opinion to have small medium and large or individual number sizes Today the work that I did revolved around learning more about creating patterns for sewing. My skills personally end past using a standard sewing machine, so when it comes to sewing the rubber base to the leather outer material of the shoe it turns out that I need to use an industrial sewing machine to ensure the quality of the work. luckily even with this small set back I know what to do because my neighbor is a very good seamstress and has a industrial sewing machine that she could use for me. So instead of using a regular sewing machine free hand I am taking a turn into the aid of others and making the print that hopefully she will be able to use.
Currently I am in the process of finding a fleecy material for the inside of the shoe. By looking at Joan fabrics I have made a list of fabrics that I am interested in simply based off of the reviews given to them about durability and comfort but also their capabilities in all different weather conditions. Hopefully soon I will be able to go in person and purchase some fabrics in store
getting the materials
up to this point deconstructing the moccasin has been incredibly easy, now the first step to making mine is identifying materials that will work the best for my shoe. The three components are the stuffing for the the shoe, the rubber, the "leather", and the stuffing inside the shoe. Looking online I'm most likely going to find a rubber mixture, a synthetic leather and possibly a wool or polyester inside. |
